The past few weeks have brought us solidly into the holiday season, and into Chicagoland’s signature cold winds. While you cannot avoid the chilly temperatures we will have over the upcoming months, you can adapt your routines to keep your body healthy. Just as you nourish your body with healthy and comforting foods during the winter, you must also care for your skin differently this season.

Why winter is hard on your skin
Winter temperatures, winds, and snowy conditions can be especially harsh on your skin. In addition to red and windblown cheeks after your long walk to the train, winter conditions also significantly dehydrate your skin. Dehydrated skin increases your risk for wrinkles and fine lines, as well as making skin appear scaly.

How to beat winter dehydration
Fortunately, you can easily tweak your skincare routine to beat the winter dehydration damage. Assure that you are moisturizing at least twice per day, and with a high quality moisturizer that gives your skin exactly what it needs. While many of our GOLDCOAST medspa clients tend to focus their extra winter moisturizers on the face area, we also recommend that you don’t forget about the rest of your body! Pay special attention to your hands, as well as your skin by applying lotion throughout the day.

You can also hydrate your skin by hydrating your body. While you may want to cozy up with a hot cup of coffee throughout the winter days, make a conscious effort to drink plenty of water instead. When you do need something to warm you up, opt for hot herbal tea instead of a caffeinated treat, that can cause more dehydration.
