How much do you know about your skin? Chances are, you don’t know as much as you should. Your skin type and skin preferences can affect your vulnerability to wrinkles and acne, which means the more you know about your own skin, the better you can care for it and look your best. Your skin type can also change throughout your lifetime. For example, your skin now is not the same as your skin when you were in high school or after you had your first child. Take a few moments and get to know your skin so that you can give it what it needs to look – and feel – its best.
Skin types are typically categorized in a few areas. Some scales list 4 skin types while others go as far as 6. We’ll go in the middle and define five categories of skin type: oily, dry, combination, normal, and sensitive.
Everyone’s skin naturally has oils to keep it from drying out. However, people with oily skin produce too much oil. If you find your face to be shiny halfway through your workday, especially on your chin, nose, or forehead, you likely have oily skin.
The opposite of oily skin, dry skin doesn’t produce enough oils. You likely have dry skin if your body has scaly patches or if you are itchy, especially during the cold winter months.
Combination skin is not necessarily the best of both worlds. Instead, people who have combination skin have oily parts and dry parts, which can make simple tasks like moisturizing a bit challenging.
People with sensitive skin can have reactions or overreactions to a variety of environmental factors. This inflammation or reactions can be uncomfortable or even painful, ranging from acne to other conditions like rosacea.
Finally, people with normal skin have skin that is healthy and well hydrated. While it can be quite difficult to find someone with normal skin, people with other skin types who find a good care regimen can end up with a healthy complexion that is otherwise normal.
